SCHOOL CLOSURE UNTIL APRIL 14th, 2020

Friday, Mar 13th

ALL SAN LUIS SCHOOLS WILL BE CLOSED MONDAY, MARCH 16th thru TUESDAY, APRIL 14th.

March 13, 2020

Dear San Luis Coastal Families:

The extent of the COVID-19 crisis currently facing our country is not something we could have expected. Over the last several weeks, San Luis Coastal has approached this fast-moving target with a calm and measured response, relying on public health experts to determine each step. We have now come to an unprecedented moment in our district’s history.

It is with sober consideration that San Luis Coastal Unified will enact a comprehensive closure of all campuses and all school-related activities, including athletics, beginning Monday, March 16, 2020 through Tuesday, April 14, 2020.

During this time, we will evaluate our path forward in close coordination with all of our county school districts, County Public Health, Office of Emergency Services, and the Governor’s Office. It is my hope that this closure will minimize the spread and the health risks associated with COVID-19 among students, staff, their families, and the broader community.

This is not an easy decision. We understand the detrimental and far-reaching effects caused by this action and the difficulties this presents to families. Closing schools has real consequences in terms of social isolation and overall wellness – especially with our most vulnerable populations. The Family Resource Centers will be open to take phone calls during this time to assist families in need of essential services. (Mariana Guttierez in San Luis Obispo at 805-458-5499 and Rocia Hernandez on the Coast at 805-235-6610.) In addition, we are developing a family resource guide to help answer any questions you might have.

We are determined to provide ongoing education for our students via online resources and ensure students who rely on our nutrition program will continue to have access to this important resource. Site principals and teachers will design virtual learning opportunities during the week of March 16 and communicate with students and families. I appreciate your patience as we navigate this virtual environment.

I want to thank our amazing employees for their tireless efforts and professionalism during this difficult time – especially while they help our students remain connected to their school community.

My commitment is to maintain regular and ongoing communication as we learn new information and make the necessary adjustments. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our families for your patience and support as we move through these uncharted waters.

Sincerely,

Dr. Eric Prater, Superintendent

San Luis Coastal Unified School District
